Critical Thinking as an Educational Value

Abstract

In the 21st century, societies expect, in order for people to attain the information or knowledge necessary to them, that people will gain fundamental skills and transfer and share knowledge in a lifelong learning process. Therefore, thinking, in particular critical thinking, is an important educational value. Critical thinking is the ability to think about thinking. It is not easy to be a critical thinker. To be so requires time and effort. The teaching of critical thinking requires the preparation of appropriate processes and learning environments. It is important that the steps of critical thinking be recognized and that one is aware of the obstacles involved in teaching critical thinking. Critical thinkers are addicted to the truth and logical reasoning. Non-critical thinkers do not need to involve themselves in self-examinations. Critical thinking is not critizing the situation, it is also the development of new methods of problem solving and creating alternatives. Individuals who possess critical thinking skills are different from those who do not possess such skills in terms of content and organization of knowledge, and perception of self. Such thinking requires appropriate processes and circumstances. Students who possess critical thinking skills and who carry the responsibility of their learning, think more effectively and learn more efficiently. Teachers, and those interested in education, need to be aware of critical thinking and critical thinking sk›lls in schools and other educational institutions. The purpose of this research is to examine the techno-cultural changes which help critical thinking change into educational values.
