Critical Thinking as an Educational Value

Abstract

In the 21st century, societies expect, in order for people to attain the information or knowledge necessary to them, that people will gain fundamental skills and transfer and share knowledge in a lifelong learning process. Therefore, thinking, in particular critical thinking, is an important educational value. Critical thinking is the ability to think about thinking. It is not easy to be a critical thinker. To be so requires time and effort. The teaching of critical thinking requires the preparation of appropriate processes and learning environments. It is important that the steps of critical thinking be recognized and that one is aware of the obstacles involved in teaching critical thinking. Critical thinkers are addicted to the truth and logical reasoning. Non-critical thinkers do not need to involve themselves in self-examinations. Critical thinking is not critizing the situation, it is also the development of new methods of problem solving and creating alternatives. Individuals who possess critical thinking skills are different from those who do not possess such skills in terms of content and organization of knowledge, and perception of self. Such thinking requires appropriate processes and circumstances. Students who possess critical thinking skills and who carry the responsibility of their learning, think more effectively and learn more efficiently. Teachers, and those interested in education, need to be aware of critical thinking and critical thinking sk›lls in schools and other educational institutions. The purpose of this research is to examine the techno-cultural changes which help critical thinking change into educational values.

Bir Eğitim Değeri Olarak Eleştirel Düşünme

Abstract

Yirmi birinci yüzyılda toplumlar, bireylerin yaşam boyu öğrenmeleri için gerekli temel beceriler olan bilgiye ulaşma, bilgiyi dağıtma ve bilgiyi paylaşma gibi özellikleri kazanmalarını beklemektedirler. Bu niteliklerin etkili ve verimli gerçekleştirilmesi için bilgi toplumunda düşünme, özellikle de eleştirel düşünme önemli bir eğitim değeri olarak gösterilmektedir. Eleştirel düşünme, düşünme hakkında düşünme yeteneğidir. Eleştirel düşünen biri olmak kolay değildir. Zaman ve çaba gerektirir. Eleştirel düşünmenin öğretilebilmesi için uygun süreçlerin ve ortamların hazırlanması gerekir. Eleştirel düşünmenin öğretim adımlarının neler olduğu ve gelişmesinin önündeki engellerin fark edilmesi eğitim açısından önem taşımaktadır. Eleştirel düşünenler gerçeğe ve güçlü akıl yürütmeye tutkundurlar. Eleştirel düşünemeyen kişiler, kendilerini ve öğrendiklerini yenileme gereksinimini duymazlar. Eleştirel düşünmek, sadece var olan durumu eleştirip öylece bırakmak değil; çözümleri, alternatişeri ortaya koymak, örneklemektir.Eleştirel düşünme becerilerini kazanmış bir öğrenci ile, hiç edinmemiş ya da sınırlı düzeyde edinebilmiş öğrencilerin, bilgi içeriğine, örgütlenmesine, olaylara, kendisine bakışı ve değerlendirme biçimleri arasında önemli farklılıklar vardır. Eleştirel düşünme becerilerini kazanmış ve kendi öğrenme işlemleri üzerinde sorumluluk alabilen öğrenciler sonuç olarak daha etkili bir biçimde düşünüp öğreneceklerdir. Eğitim kurumlarında, düşünme becerileri ve eleştirel düşünmeyle ilgili seminerler verilerek öğretmenler ve eğitim sorumluluğu taşıyanlar aydınlatılmalıdır. Bu çalışmanın amacı eleştirel düşünmenin önemli bir eğitim değerine dönüşmesine yol açan tekno-kültürel değişimi irdelemek, bu konuya literatür çerçevesinde bir bakış açısı getirmektir.
