İngiltere’de Müslüman Ailelerin Ev Okulu Tecrübeleri ve Türkiye’de Ev Okulunun İmkânı

Abstract

Experiences of Muslim Home School Families in England and The Possibility of Home Schooling in Turkey

Year 2019, Volume: 17 Issue: 38, 71 - 104, 25.12.2019

Abstract

This
article aims to explore the experiences of Muslim families who prefer home
schooling in England. Case study approach within qualitative research paradigm is
applied in this research which seeks to explore what home schooling is in
England and how and why Muslim families use it. For this purpose, interviews
were conducted with Muslim families who prefer home schooling and related
literature, publications of Muslim home school associations and blogs of
families sharing their home school experiences on the internet were examined.
The data obtained were coded and analysed by a qualitative analysis method. It is
found that families who prefer home schooling are granted a wide range of
rights in England. The lack of high quality Muslim schools, unimportance
attached to religious and moral education in state schools, school teaching that
contradicts Islamic faith and bullying, discrimination, peer pressure and
sexual exposure in schools are among the reasons why Muslim families prefer
home schooling. In addition, Muslim families seem to question the quality of
academic education in state schools. It is found that the majority of Muslim
families who prefer home schooling do not have a teaching certificate and
mothers are generally responsible for home schooling. However, home schooling seems
to be a social and collective movement rather than an education confined to a
single house or limited by the knowledge of a single parent. The article
discusses the possibility of home schooling in Turkey and concludes with some
recommendations.
