Abstract

Continuous Monitoring of Rail Breaks, Abrupt Stiffness Changes, and Geometric Discontinuities using On-board Measurements via Smartphones

Year 2024, Issue: 20, 54 - 66, 31.07.2024

Abstract

In rail transport systems, "Track Condition Assessment" is of great importance for ensuring transportation safety and reducing maintenance costs. In this context, one of the most widely used methods is "On-board Measurement". However, the conventional measurement/recording/diagnostic trains are very expensive. In addition, measurements can only be made a few times a year, and train traffic is restricted during the measurements. The aim of this study is to determine whether rail breaks/fractures, which threaten transportation safety, and abrupt stiffness changes and geometric discontinuities, which increase maintenance costs, can be detected and monitored using “smartphones”. For this purpose, after reviewing and interpreting existing studies carried out in the literature to date, the proposed method is explained step by step in a simple way that can be easily used by the industry. As a result of the vertical acceleration measurements carried out, it was found that both the rail breaks and abrupt stiffness changes/geometric discontinuities can be easily diagnosed using the proposed mobile device measurement method.
