Abstract

Abstract

Translations, mainly from Greek and partly from Indian traditions, have played an important role in the development of science and thought in Islamic societies. The majority of these translations were made by non-Muslims. Biruni is one of the rare figures among Muslims who was familiar with the thought of the Indian tradition who, on the bases of primary sources authored and translated Indian thought to Muslim society from a scientific perspective. In the book I will discuss here, Verdon examines two books that Biruni translated from Sanskrit into Arabic in terms of their contributions to translation studies and to Indology.
