Most of the Arabic language rhetoric scholars have been using the term of representation (temthil) for simile (teshbih-i temthil) and representative metaphor (istiare-i temthiliyye) commonly. However, -generally- when representation is used absolutely, it is meant “representative metaphor”. In addition, Muhammed Desûkî states that it is not able to called absolutely representation for simile, and if simile means, then terms of teshbih temsil or teshbih-i temsil should be used. While the use of terms of representation was common in early period rhetoric scholars, representative metaphor has been more commonly used in late periods by rhetoric scholars, including today. This distinction is quite important, so that, it should be taken into account in order to make the term of temthil clear and not to be confused. The first to study temthil under the title of representative metaphor was Sakkaki, then most of the rhetoric scholar followed him.
