The Effect of Cooperative Learning on Analytical and Creative Thinking: The Case of 5th Grade "Human and Environment" Unit

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of cooperative learning on the analytical and creative thinking skills of 5th-grade students in the "Human and Environment" unit. In the study, a quasi-experimental research design with a pre-test-post-test applied control group was used. The sample consisted of 32 students (18 EG and 14 CG) studying in two 5th grade classes. Analytical Thinking Scale and Scientific Creativity Scale were used as data collection tools. For the analysis of the data obtained in the study, the normality values of the data were first calculated. Dependent sample t-test, independent sample t-test, and ANCOVA analysis were used to analyze the data. Accordingly, the experimental group, in which cooperative learning was applied, showed a significant difference in terms of analytical thinking and scientific creativity compared to the control group. In addition, the pre-and post-data of the analytical thinking and scientific creativity skills of the experimental group were compared. Accordingly, there was a significant difference in terms of scientific creativity and analytical thinking skills after the cooperative learning application (p<.05). According to the results of the study, cooperative learning improved 5th-grade students' analytical and creative thinking skills (p<.05). In parallel with these results, it is thought that this study will contribute to the acquisition of "cooperation" skills, one of the 21st-century skills, and implementation of cooperative learning, which is emphasized to be used in the 2018 science curriculum, in practice.
