An Application of a Qualitative Research Method on the Program of the Graduate Study of Art Education

Abstract

A research method course called "A method of Qualitative Research in Art Education: Educational Criticism was established as a field teaching subject in the Master's Program of the Art Teacher Education at Gazi University". Research studies about art education in primary, secondary and higher education are very limited. It would be more useful if the research studies could reveal qualitative aspects of the art teaching process in line with the nature of art. `Educational Criticism' as a qualitative research method is used to investigate the socio-cultural problems in art education and the professional qualifications of the art teachers in realizing their teaching procedures. Specifically, the stages of the qualitative research such as data collection, content analyses, comparative analyses and writing the research report contribute to the field of art education through the domain of the educational criticism method. Findings based on this research study firstly showed that the graduate student choosing this course were mainly art teachers, secondly they did not only gained knowledge and useful experiences on schools, art lessons and looking at them in a critical manner, but also they found good opportunity to interrogate and to compare those to their own schools, their art lessons and art teaching methods.
