APPLICATION OF PERT TECHNIQUE TO HARBOR MARINE SERVICE AUTOMATION PROJECT
Abstract
A project involves the overall activities which consume resources and have to be completed according to determined goals within a specified time. Project management consists of planning, programming and controlling of project activities. Project planning methods are used for project management. Gantt charts, CPM and PERT methods are the project planning methods. CPM assumes that duration of activities are known with certainity. However for many projects it is not possible. Because the project is either applied for the first time or it is applied rarely. PERT is applied in these situations and for each activity three time estimations are done. International transportation and logistic terms also have gained importance by the increasing global competition. In order to get competetive advantage at harbors, which are inseperable part of marine transportation, it is aimed to provide more efficient service to customers at minimum costs. In addition to the services provided at harbors, such as temporary storage, transportation, stuffing and unstuffing, there are also marine services berting and leaving of vessels. The latter, which is provided by tugboat, is named as a tugboat service.
In this study PERT is applied to Harbor Marine Service Automation Project. The mean completion time and variance of project is found and probabilities of different completion time of project are calculated.
