WALT WHITMAN’IN ÇİMEN YAPRAKLARI: “BENLİĞİMİN ŞARKISI”1 ŞİİRİ İLE ON DOKUZUNCU YÜZYIL AMERİKAN İDEALİNE GÜNÜMÜZDEN BİR BAKIŞ

Abstract

Bu çalışma on dokuzuncu yüzyıl Amerikan şairi Walt Whitman’ın Çimen Yaprakları [Leaves of Grass] adlı eserinin “Benliğimin Şarkısı” [Song of Myself] adlı şiirini, 1855 yılı özgün basım metni üzerinden, bir yüksek edebiyat eseri olarak, alanın önde gelen edebiyatçı ve eleştirmenlerinin bakışından değerlendirir. Bununla beraber, on dokuzuncu yüzyılda Whitman’ın görmek istediği Amerika ile, günümüz Amerika’sının ırkçı söylemi aynı şiir üzerinden karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenir: Bu amaçla, Whitman’ın anısına gerçekleştirilen Amerikan PBS Televizyonu News Hour, 2014 ve 2017 yapımı iki adet popüler program kaydı, güncel ırk söylemleri kapsamında değerlendirilir. Bu iki kayıttan ilki, Whitman’ın “Benliğimin Şarkısı” adlı şiirini, 1855 yılı özgün basım metninin yüz yıllık makinalarda yeniden elde basım sürecini ele alır (PBS NewsHour, 2014). PBS NewsHour tarafından 2017 yılında tanıtılan diğer kayıt ise, Jennifer Crandall adlı yapımcının Whitman, Alabama adlı 52 bölüm olarak tasarlanan belgesel serisidir (Crandall, 2020b). Bu belgesel, Whitman’ın yaşamış olduğu yüzyıl içerisinde idealleştirmiş olduğu Amerika ve Amerikalı imgesinin “Benliğimin Şarkısı” şiiri aracılığı ile günümüz güneyli, beyaz ve Afrikalı-Amerika’lıların, güncel yaşantılarında tecrübe edilişini konu alır. Ne var ki, her iki program kaydının içeriğindeki içtenlik ve tarihi anlamda edebiyat büyüğüne sahip çıkma, onu anma gayreti, program başlıkları aracılığıyla tanıtımlarındaki ironik ırkçı ifadelerle çelişir durumdadır. Dolayısıyla bu çalışma, Walt Whitman’ın “Benliğimin Şarkısı” adlı şiiri ile idealize edilmiş olan, on dokuzuncu yüzyıl Amerika’sını karşılaştırarak, günümüzün ırksal bilinci kapsamında edebiyata ve tarihe sahip çıkmanın ikilemlerini aktarır.

WALT WHITMAN'S LEAVES OF GRASS: A LOOK AT THE NINETEENTH CENTURY AMERICAN IDEAL WITH THE POEM SONG OF MYSELF

Abstract

This work evaluates the poem, Song of Myself in Leaves of Grass by the nineteenth-century American poet Walt Whitman, through the perspective of leading literary writers and critics of the field, as a work of high literature, based on the original 1855 edition. In this study, Whitman’s nineteenth century America, and present-day racial discourse is evaluated comparatively: to this end, two popular programs aired through American PBS Television in 2014 and 2017, realized in memory of Whitman are examined within the context of present-day racial discourse. The first recording addresses the reprinting process of Whitman's 1855 original text of Song of Myself through hundred-year-old machines (PBS NewsHour, 2014). The other recording introduced by PBS News Hour in 2017 is the documentary series named Whitman, Alabama, planned as 52 episodes, by Jennifer Crandall. It concerns the experiences of modern-day southern whites and African-Americans in their current lives through Walt Whitman's Song of Myself (Crandall, 2020b). However, the sincerity in the content of both program recordings, and the effort to commemorate the literary grandeur contradict the ironic racist statements in the program titles or promotions. Therefore, this study compares the idealized nineteenth-century America through Walt Whitman's poem Song of Myself and conveys the dilemmas of embracing literature and history within the scope of today's racial consciousness.
