MEMORY IN SYLVIE GERMAIN’S BOOK OF NIGHTS AND AMBER NIGHT NOVELS: THE PROBLEM OF WAR AND EVIL

Abstract

The transformation of memory related to war and evil into a literary theme is almost as old as the history of literature. The fact that war is a disaster, the wide impact it creates, and the dramatic results it reveals create a problematic area in memory as the subject of the writing. Sylvie Germain, who obsessively deals with war as the image of evil in her novels, deals with war only through what she reads and hears, even though she did not experience it. Germain narrates the shocks of war and the deep ruptures it creates in an epic language and in the style of magical realism. Focusing on the destructive, transformative, and increasingly morbid feature of war on spiritual dynamics, which never loses its effect even after it is over, Germain also makes references to sacred texts. The narratives titled The Book of Nights and Amber Night, which constitute the subject of this article, are the narratives of this effect shifting to magical reality at a dizzying speed. On the other hand, both novels are at the intersection of different narrative genres such as mythology, legend, surreal, fantasy, and reality. Both novels include some elements of the European narrative tradition in the context of mythology, superstition and folklore, and in almost every case, they rely on the deep-rooted heritage of the same tradition. In this article, we will try to explain and interpret memory as a phenomenon that feeds the theme of war in the two novels in question.

SYLVIE GERMAIN’IN GECELERİN KİTABI VE AMBER GECE ROMANLARINDA BELLEK: SAVAŞ VE KÖTÜLÜK SORUNU

Abstract

Savaşa ve kötülüğe ilişkin belleğin bir yazınsal izleğe dönüşmesi neredeyse yazın tarihi kadar eskidir. Yarattığı geniş etki, ortaya koyduğu dramatik sonuçlar nedeniyle savaş yazının konusu olarak bellekte sorunlu bir alan yaratır. Kötülüğün görüntüsü olarak savaşı romanlarında saplantı düzeyinde ele alan Slyvie Germain, savaşı yaşamadığı halde, sadece okudukları ve duydukları üzerinden ele alır. Germain savaşın sarsıntılarını, yarattığı derin kırılmaları destansı bir dille ve büyülü gerçekçilik tarzında anlatır. Savaşın ruhsal dinamikler üzerindeki yıkıcı, dönüştürücü, bittikten sonra bile etkisini hiç kaybetmeyen ve gittikçe artan hastalıklı özelliğine odaklanan Germain, ayrıca kutsal metinlere göndermeler yapar. Bu yazının konusunu oluşturan Gecelerin Kitabı ve Amber Gece adlı anlatılar bu etkinin baş döndürücü bir hızla büyülü gerçekliğe kaymasının anlatılarıdır. Öte yandan her iki roman mitoloji, efsane, gerçeküstü, fantastik, gerçeklik gibi farklı anlatı türlerinin kavşağındadır. Her iki roman Avrupa anlatı geleneğinin mitolojik, batıl ve folklor bağlamındaki bazı ögelerini içerir ve hemen her durumda yine aynı geleneğin köklü mirasına yaslanır. Biz bu yazıda söz konusu iki romanda belleğin savaş izleğini besleyen bir olgu olarak açıklamasını ve yorumlamasını yapmaya çalışacağız.
