FEMININITY AND VIRTUE IN THE ROMAN REPUBLIC AND EARLY EMPIRE: AN EVALUATION FROM A GENDERED PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

In ancient Roman thought, femininity and virtue were conceptualized within a male-centric framework, deeply embedded in the social structure and philosophical doctrines of the era. Rather than being recognized as autonomous moral agents, women were confined within predefined social roles dictated by the patriarchal order. Roman law reinforced the authority of the pater familias, limiting women’s independence and restricting them to the private sphere, while the public domain remained under male control. Virtus, the Roman concept of courage and moral excellence, was inherently linked to masculinity, whereas female virtue was primarily defined through chastity (pudicitia), modesty (verecundia) and familial devotion/piety (pietas). Augustan literature portrayed women as both instruments of imperial ideology and symbols of moral decline, while thinkers like Seneca presented conflicting views on female virtue. In Roman historiography, women’s roles were often depicted either as paragons of virtue or as agents of political betrayal. This study examines the status of women in Roman society through the lenses of law, philosophy, and literature, revealing the ideological constructs that shaped their representation.

CUMHURİYET VE İLK İMPARATORLUK DÖNEMLERİ ANTİK ROMA’SINDA KADINLIK VE ERDEM: TOPLUMSAL CİNSİYET PERSPEKTİFİNDE BİR DEĞERLENDİRME

Abstract

Antik Roma düşüncesinde kadınlık ve erdem kavramları, toplumsal yapı ve felsefi doktrinler çerçevesinde, erkek merkezli bir anlayışla ele alınmıştır. Ka-dınlar, erdemli bireyler olarak kabul edilmek yerine, erkek egemen sistemin içinde belirlenen toplumsal rollerle sınırlandırılmıştır. Roma Hukukunda pater familias otoritesinin mutlak gücü, kadınların bağımsız özne olmalarını engellemiş; kamusal alan erkeklere, özel alan ise, kadınlara tahsis edilmiştir. Virtus, cesaret ve erdem kavramı olarak, doğrudan erkeklikle ilişkilendirilmiş; kadınla-rın erdemi ise, daha çok iffet (pudicitia), utanma duygusu (verecundia) ve aile bağlılığı/dindarlık (pietas) gibi kavramlarla tanımlanmıştır. Augustus dönemi edebiyatı, kadınları hem imparatorluk ideolojisini destekleyen hem de ahlaki yozlaşmanın sembolü olarak resmetmiş; Seneca gibi düşünürler ise, kadınların erdemi konusunda çelişkili yaklaşımlar sergilemiştir. Roma tarih yazımında kadınların konumu, politik ve sosyal ideolojinin bir yansıması olarak ele alınmış, kadın figürleri ya ihanetin ya da erdemin taşıyıcısı olarak betimlenmiştir. Bu çalışma, Roma toplumunda kadının statüsünü, felsefi, edebi ve hukuki yaklaşımlar bağlamında ele almaktadır.
