Modal Analysis and Topology Optimization of a Crawler Tracked System Used for Recycling Machines
Abstract
In recent years, a number of scholars have studied the vibration characteristics of the crawler tracked machines from different perpectives, largely focusing on the analysis of vibration, modal analysis of the machine’s chassis frame, the establishment of vibration model, vibration and noise of several equipments on the machine. At the present, researchers have been focused their attentions on making machines safer while reducing the level of noise and vibration that machines produce. In the industry, it is aimed that most structures do not change their strength when their weights and dimensions are decreased. Similarly, structural strength and durability are important properties in common vibration issues. Topology optimization helps in weight reduction by optimizing the material layout without affecting its structural integrity. In this study, the modal analysis is performed to determine the vibrational behaviour of the steel tracked system in the first step. Then the most important natural frequencies or modes are found using the mode participation factor and the effective mass. In the second step of the study, topology optimization is applied to reduce the tracked system undercarriage’s weight with the aim of maximizing the most important natural frequencies. One of the main goals in the design of vibrating structures in order to avoid risk of resonance is to keep the natural frequencies of this structure away from the external excitation frequencies. When the topology optimized model is compared to the original design under the same constraints, it has achieved a 20% weight reduction, a 18% reduction in maximum stress, and a 26% reduction in total deformation, beside a 18.4% increase in its first-order natural frequency. Thus increased natural frequencies are obtained by topology optimization using ANSYS in this study.
