INVESTIGATION OF TURKEY’S LIGHTNING OBSERVATION

Abstract

Thunderstorms are dangerous and hazardous weather events that cause life and property losses. Lightning, strong winds, excessive rainfalls, and flash floods are counted among generated phenomena by thunderstorms. Each one of these phenomena is evaluated as a natural hazard with meteorological origin. The main topic of this study is lightning which express their electrical activity. This study is the first of its kind in our country, and examines lightning by remote sensing, for the 5-year time interval between 2010 and 2014. Seasonal and yearly data is used from an observing system operated by the British Meteorology Office, and called Arrival Time Differencing NETwork. According to the annual results obtained, majority of Central and Southeastern Anatolian, and one part of Eastern Anatolian regions have lightning activity as low as 0.5-1.7 lightning/(km2year). On the other hand, Hatay coasts and İskenderun Gulf with coast parts, and offshores of Antalya, Belek, Side, Alanya, Muğla, Dalaman, Fethiye, Marmaris are the areas with the heaviest lightning intensity as 4.4-7.1 lightning/(km2year) in our country
