LIGHT-DUTY VEHICLE CHASSIS ANAYLSIS AND OPTIMIZATION

Abstract

The amount and variety of vehicles which serve different purposes increases with the development of automotive technology. Especially local municipalities decrease their operating costs by saving human power and they also increase the service speed with the usage of light-weight vehicles. These vehicles mainly serve as garbage trucks, street washer trucks, street sweeping trucks and canal jetting vehicles. In this study, the chassis of a street washer truck with hydrostatic drive system is analyzed and optimized based on forces acting upon the chassis. These kind of service vehicles which are generally used in urban applications with low speed range, have different types of forces on their chassis compared to similar conventional vehicles due to their equipments and operating conditions. Therefore, sizing and topology optimizations are performed based on the strength of the chassis profile connection location. The main purpose of the optimization is, determining the thickness of the profiles and reducing the mass of the chassis where the stresses are lower
