A NOVEL APPROACH FOR COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN OPTIMIZATION OF CAST BRACKETS

Abstract

In this study, a novel approach has been proposed for design optimization of cast brackets used in ground vehicles and an application has been presented for internal combustion engine mount bracket. This approach is based on using finite elements method with topology optimization algorithms. Cross section width and mold drawing direction have been used as optimization constraints to obtain a manufacturable optimized design. Durability and vibration performances of the new design based on optimum topology and the original design were compared using finite element method. It is seen that equivalent performance was successfully achieved while having 23 percent weight reduction. Having shown its application, this novel approach can also be successfully used in design optimization of similar brackets used in different vehicles
