3D GEOMETRIC MODEL CONSTRUCTION USING REVERSE ENGINEERING AND SOME APPLICATIONS IN SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY

Abstract

3D geometric model of a part or a product can be generated from scanned point cloud using reverse engineering techniques. In this study, recent 3D model construction techniques are first explained and comparison between these techniques are made. These techniques utilize mesh models as input and segment them into sub-meshes, each of which are fitted with high level geometrical surface entities such as B-spline, sphere and cylinder. Next, some reverse engineering applications in ship building industry are mentioned in this work. Ship is a mega structure, which is builded by assembling small ship parts. Utilizing reverse engineering techniques in shipbuilding is crucial in order to increase accuracy of these small ship parts and decrease the shipbuilding time. Finally, recent reverse engineering problems, their possible solutions and new research directions are outlined. It is believed that hybrid techniques utilizing both B-spline surfaces and geometric primitives such as sphere/cylinder can increase the quality of the generated geometric model
