PETROLOGY AND ORIGIN OF THE TINAZTEPE (BUCA-İZMİR) FULGURITE

Abstract

Greenish-black glassy fulgurite formations in the Dokuz Eylul University Tınaztepe Campus, exposed during 3rd foundation excavation in 2006 are studied. The fulgurite was formed in the lateritic soil that developed along the Neogene limestones in the area. Fulgurtes are generally formed by melting of the rocks or soils in response to the increasing temperature and impactshock during the lightinings and scarcely meteor fallings. The molten rocks flows and rapidly cools to form glassy rocks, known as fulgurites. Such glassy formations are also formed by melting of moulding sand in high temperature furnace of iron-and-steel plants. In order to reveal the origin of the glassy rock, mineralogical-petrographical, XRD, SEM-EDS and chemical studies have been carried out. The data show that the glassy fulgurite were formed by melting of mainly lateritic soil, and partly base limestones, due to lightining
