OPTIMUM DESIGN OF PILED RAFT FOUNDATIONS ON LAYERED SOILS
Abstract
Piled raft concept base on the principal of load sharing between the raft and pile group. Load sharing may provide economical designs, since it reduces required number of piles significantly. However, settlements may increase, since the interaction among piles cause a reduction in the stiffness of pile group. In this study, effects of pile number and length on the settlement behavior of a piled raft is investigated. It is shown that the optimum solution may be obtained by increasing the pile length rather than number of piles. Simplified method of Randolph and finite element method are used for settlement calculation and analysis results for two methods are compared. Pile-soil-pile interaction is calculated using equation the method of Randolph. Besides, non-linear behavior is taken into account using Caputo and Viggiani approach. It is shown that the settlement of piled rafts is independent from the number of piles beyond a certain number due to the interaction among piles. Optimum design is given as the number of piles that the settlement does not reduce anymore
