ECONOMICAL ANALYSIS OF THE TREATMENT OF MARBLE PROCESSING WASTEWATERS BY ELECTROCOAGULATION AND CHEMICAL COAGULATION PROCESSES
Abstract
In this study, it was attempted to determine whether electrocoagulation (EC) or chemical coagulation (CC)
process was more economical by analysing the economical aspects of the processes for removal of suspended
solids (SS) from marble processing wastewaters. In the EC process, aluminium (Al) and iron (Fe) electrodes were
run in monopolar serial (MPP) and monopolar parallel (MPS) connection systems, individually. In the CC
process, several coagulants such as AlCl3.6H2O, Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, FeCl3.6H2O and Fe2(SO4)3.7H2O were
examined. Operating costs of the processes were calculated as U.S. dollar ($) per cubic meter (m3
) volume of
wastewaters by taking the optimum operating conditions into account, under which higher SS removal efficiencies
were obtained. For the EC process, operating cost of each electrode connection system operated as MPP Al, MPS
Al, MPP Fe and MPS Fe was calculated as 0.0594, 0.1809, 0.1104 and 0.0962 $/m3
, respectively, whereas the
cost was calculated for the CC process, where AlCl3.6H2O, Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, FeCl3.6H2O and Fe2(SO4)3.7H2O
coagulants were used, as 0.31, 0.09, 0.05 and 0.13 $/m3
, respectively. Consequently, the lowest operating cost for
the removal of SS from marble processing wastewaters was obtained in case of using the EC process operated by
MPP Al electrode system and the CC process where FeCl3.6H2O coagulant was used.
