DETERMINATION OF ROOM AND PILLAR METHOD PARAMETERS IN UNDERGROUND MARBLE QUARRY

Abstract

The increasing need for natural stone in our country and across the world gradually forces the natural stone quarries to be operated at deeper elevations in our day. Additionally, in steep terrains where the infrastructure activities of marble quarry are hard to be supplied, underground marble quarrying becomes inevitable in places with large amount of overburden and harsh weather conditions and also in deeper elevations where the block efficiency increases. Among the underground methods; the productions that will made through applying roompillar method are crucial from the aspects of reviving the inactive marble quarries, taking into production the marble quarries that are not possible to be exploited economically by open pit methods and evaluating the present reserves more efficiently and shortly. Therefore, in this study, the marble quarries that could employ room-and-pillar minig method were selected from five different regions nationwide and natural stone production parameters were attempted to be evaluated in terms of economic and technical applicability.
