AN EVALUATION ON MACHINABILITY OF AISI 303 AND AISI 410 STAINLESS STEELS MACHINED BY TiC COATED TIPS

Abstract

In this study, machinability properties of stainless steel materials having two different microstructures and chemical compositions, namely austenitic (AISI 303) and martensitic (AISI 410), were investigated. Machinability studies were carried out in dry turning conditions. In experiments, cemented carbide tool coated with TiC was used and, feed rate and depth of cut were kept constant at 0.12 mm/rev and 1.2 mm consequently. Turning forces, chip forms and surface roughness were examined as machinability properties. Different cutting forces and surface roughness were obtained depending on cutting speeds. Turning forces decreased with increasing cutting speed for both materials. Because of the high ratio of the sulphur in austenitic stainless steel (AISI 303) lower turning forces and surface roughness were abtained for this steel than the martensitic stainless steel (AISI 410).
