STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF MAGNITUDE-FREQUENCY RELATIONSHIP FOR THE EARTHQUAKES IN WESTERN ANATOLIA, TURKEY
Abstract
Aim of this study is statistical analysis of magnitude-frequency relationship for the earthquakes in western Anatolia, a region between 36.8°-39.8° N and 26°-30° E. Earthquake data used in the analysis were obtained from two different catalogs reported by Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute of Bosphorus University. These were described as the Integrated Homogenize Turkish Earthquake Catalog (IHTEC) and the Catalog for Turkey and Surrounding Areas (TEEC). Magnitude scales reported in IHTEC are Ms, Md ,Mb, MLand Mw. Utilizing these information and obtained empirical relationships between different magnitude scales, all magnitude values in TEEC were converted to Md values. Seismic hazard were evaluated by applying GutenbergRichter Relationship to both catalogs’ data. After that, for the Maximum Values Method, which is characterized by the largest amplitude value for each year, fitness of the Exponansiyel, Normal, Log-Normal and Gumbel Distributions were examined. Probability distribution which represents the best fit for this method is Normal Distribution. Utilizing the obtained Normal Distribution parameters to the data of IHTEC and TEEC, return periods of the earthquake with a magnitude values equal and greater than Md = 6.5 are 54.64 and 53.88 years, respectively. Obtained not only magnitude-frequency relationships and also exceedance probabilities and return periods have shown that the results are very sensitive to magnitude scale chosen as input data for statistical analysis
