INVESTIGATION OF SECOND ORDER ANALYSIS METHODS IN STEEL STRUCTURE SYSTEMS

Abstract

In addition to vertical loads, horizontal loads such as earthquake and wind loads lead to form second order effects with large displacements changing the structural behavior. Hence, it is important to use calculation methods that consider the second order effects in the analyses. In this study, second order analyses were carried out with incremental and practical methods on steel structure systems having four story and five bays. Story drift and member end moments obtained from incremental and practical second order analyses were investigated with the reference study which is considered and the results of both calculation methods were comparatively evaluated. Results of this study using incremental and practical second order analyses methods were found to be compatible with the results of the reference work and were proven to have adequate sensitivity. In order to investigate the steel braced systems used in the study, concentric steel braced systems with various geometric forms were generated, the variation of slenderness ratio, overall drift index and story drift values were determined. Using concentrically braced steel systems with geometric forms provided savings of material, besides; the overall story drift and overall story drift index were efficiently limited.
