DYNAMIC SOIL BEHAVIOR ANALYSES OF NORTH-EAST BURSA CITY CENTER SOILS

Abstract

Bursa city center was established on foot of The Uludağ Mountain through the Bursa plain. Alluvium thickness reaches 150 m in the plain at certain locations of the city center. The thick alluvium layers in the city are capable of amplificating earthquake effects. Also, there are saturated and near surface sand layers. Saturated sandy layers need to be investigated to determine liquefaction risk. In this paper, amplification characteristics of the alluvium layers, liquefaction risk and settlement potential of the saturated sandy soils due to earthquake loading were investigated for the North-East Bursa city soils. The 17 August 1999 Kocaeli Earthquake acceleration record scaled as necessary was used in the dynamic analyses. Maximum acceleration value for the base rock was estimated using attenuation relationships. Calculated maximum acceleration values for the soil surface in the analyses were compared with those of acceleration records acquired at the city center. Liquefaction and post earthquake settlements were also computed for a scenario earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 generating 0.4g maximum surface acceleration.
