BUILDING ENERGY SIMULATION TOOLS AND SELECTION CRITERIA

Abstract

As in all around the world, more than one-third of the total energy consumption in Turkey is used in buildings. A significant part of the amount of energy consumed during the life of a building is determined at the design stage. While many methods were developed for use in different design stages to minimize the energy requirements of a building, however, the greatest benefit from these measures would only be obtained by assessment during the design process. Building energy simulation (BES) is one of the most efficient tools used for this purpose. This article aims to improve the current BES tools for wider use. Fort his reason, the most widely used five BES tools are evaluated and major criteria for selection of a BES tool are proposed. These criteria include: the requirements of the building, the user profile, the expertise of the users,the targeted design phase, the program interface, accuracy of the calculation motors,input/output properties and capability to share information with other software
