EFFECT OF AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE ON STEADY AND OSCILLATORY TERMOCAPILLARY FLOW

Abstract

In this research, steady and oscillatory thermocapillary flows of high Prandtl number fluids were investigated experimentally under normal gravity in floating-zone configuration by heating from above (opposite direction of thermocapillary and buoyant forces). A liquid column was suspended vertically between two 3 mm diameter circular copper rods which were applied at different temperatures. Flow and temperature oscillations were observed under various conditions using 5 cSt silicone oil as the test fluid. The effect of heat transfer from the liquid free surface to surrounding air on the onset of the oscillations was investigated. The values of the critical temperature differences measured at various ambient air temperatures and various cold wall temperatures were investigated in the present experiment.
