INVESTIGATION ON SULFATE RESISTANCE OF BLAST FURNACE SLAG MORTARS

Abstract

Sulfate attack is one of the important chemical deterioration processes for concrete structures. In this study, expansions and compressive strength variations of mortars produced with Portland cement and different amount of ground granulated blast furnace slag contents, were measured under sulfate attack. Test specimens were prepared according to ASTM C 1012. One group of specimens was kept continuously in sodium sulphate solution with concentration of 150 g/l. The other group was exposed to wetting and drying cycles with the same solution. Similar test program was applied to the samples which were steam cured at 60 °C for 9 hours. Test results are presented with control mixes which were kept in water, comparatively. Sulfate resistance of mortars was positively effected by ground granulated blast furnace slag replacement with cement.
