THE EFFECT OF LOADING RATE ON COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH AND MODULUS OF ELASTICITY OF CONCRETE

Abstract

From the uniaxial compressive strength test, which is widely used in quality control of concrete, different compressive strengths can be obtained at different loading rates. As the rate of loading decreases, concrete specimen ruptures at a lower strength level, as the rate of loading increases rupture occurs at a higher strength level. This situation can be explained by the increase in the duration time of load on specimen and some creep may take place. For this reason rate of loading is limited to 1.5–3.5 kgf/cm2/sec by American concrete compressive strength test standards. In this study, standard cylinder concrete specimens were prepared at two strength levels. The compressive strength tests were performed at three different loading rates (over, under and between the recommended values by standards) at two different ages. Stress-strain relationships and modulus of elasticity of high strength concrete specimens were also investigated.
