DETERMINATION OF RESERVOIR CAPACITY WITH CRITICAL PERIOD METHODS
Abstract
When the required diversion rate from a river exceeds the natural flow rate, the excess demand
can only be met from an alternative supply (e.g. groundwater) or from surface storage. In most
instances, the appropriate response is the construction of a single reservoir, followed later by
additional reservoirs as the demand continues to grow. The storage required on a river to meet a
specific demand depends primarily on such factors as the magnitude and the variability of the river
flows, the size of the demand, and the degree of reliability of this demand being met.
A large number of procedures have been proposed to estimate storage requirements. In the
presented study, reservoir capacity-yield-reliability relationships are investigated for a single
reservoir by using monthly and annual mean flow data of EIE-Yiğitler (525) streamgauging station on
Yiğitler Creek in Gediz Basin. This data is observed for a period of 19 years between 1976 and 1994.
The reason why the Yiğitler sub-basin has been selected is that there is a dam project with a capacity
of 25.42 106m3planned by DSİ. The required reservoir capacity is estimated by using mass curve,
residual mass curve, minimum flow, Alexander, Dincer, Gould’s Gamma, and behaviour analysis
methods, and the obtained results are compared with the planned reservoir capacity of Yiğitler Dam.
