TREATMENT OF OLIVE OIL MILL WASTEWATERS WITH CHEMICAL TREATMENT METHODS
Abstract
No chemical material used during olive oil production. But, wastewater originated from olive oil
production has a great pollutant potential. In this paper, olive oil production was defined and
characteristics of olive mill effluent originating from production process were given. In experimental
studies, chemical treatability as a pretreatment of different olive oil factories wastewater was
investigated. While COD removal efficiency was obtained 13 % by using lime as a coagulant at
chemical precipitation, it reached to 38 % with HCl. In chemical oxidation study, KMnO4, NaOCl,
H2O2 and Fenton’s Reagent were used as chemical oxidant and up to 70% COD removal efficiencies
were obtained. In this paper, experimental studies and removal efficiencies achieved as a result of
these studies were presented. In addition, applicability of results of these studies in our country was
discussed.
