GEOTECHNICAL ASSESSMENT OF THE ARMUTALANI SETTLEMENT AREA (MARMARİS-MUĞLA)
Abstract
The Armutalanı Municipality Settlement Area which is mainly located on an alluvial-plain, is limited
by graben faults all around. Radiolarities interbedded with chert and green ultrabasic rocks belonging to
the Armutalanı Melange are underlied by the alluvial-plain. The Armutalanı Melange is composed of a
radiolarite and spilitic volcanic matrix and blocks of platform type carbonate rocks floating in the matrix.
The age of the melange is Upper Cretaceous. Geological and geotechnical studies were carried out to
determine suitable, provisional and unsuitable areas for settlement in Armutalanı (Marmaris). For this
purpose, 1/1000 scaled engineering geological maps of the study area consisted of 20 sheets were
prepared. In addition, boreholes were drilled at 25 locations and Standart Penetration Tests were carried
out through the geotechnical boreholes for bearing capacity calculations and liquefaction potential
assessments of the ground. Susceptible areas for mass movements and steep slopes (a ³ %36) were
determined and shown on the engineering geological maps. Additionally, flood cones in the mouths of
streams which prevents to the stream flows is mapped and these cones are determined for settlement
purposes. Based on these studies, the Armutalanı settlement area were divided into three zones; as
provisional, suitable and unsuitable areas for settlement purposes by using the Geographic Information
Systems.
