HEAT BALANCE AND THERMAL COMFORT CONDITIONS FOR HUMAN BODY

Abstract

Heat balance is the equilibrium between heat loss from body and the energy produced by the metabolic activities. This equilibrium is need to be continued of metabolic activities of the body. Thermal comfort is the satisfaction expressed with the thermal environment, so that its concept is related with emotions and senses. Hence, the thermal comfort is different from the heat balance. That means human can feel uncomfortable even if the heat balance is obtained. As a result, the heat balance is needed but is not sufficient for the thermal comfort. Moreover, the thermal comfort conditions are obtained in a limited zone in the heat balance boundaries. In this study, personal end environmental parameters which influence the thermal comfort conditions are examined by the heat transfer equations between body and environment and the empirical equations which state the thermal comfort and physiological control mechanisms effects. To keep the body in thermal comfort zone, change of environmental parameters (i.e. temperature, relative humidity and velocity) and personal parameters (i.e. thermal resistance of clothing and metabolic activities) and their influence on each other are graphically investigated. The change of parameters like sensible and heat loss from the body and the blood rate, the skin wetness by the thermal comfort parameters are comparatively examined.
