PARAMETRICAL ANALYSES ON SHEAR STRENGTH TEST

Abstract

In this study, firstly the basic principles of the direct shear test have been evaluated and then the direct shear strength of different rock units were determined. The study covered white limestone, yellow limestone and travertine units. Shear tests were performed under the suggested conditions of the International Society for Rock Mechanics on 29 normal, heated and wetted samples (ISRM, 1981). Then, normal displacement vs. normal stress, shear displacement vs. shear stress and normal stress vs. shear strength relations have been obtained. Then, physical properties like peak and residual shear strengths, apparent cohesion (c), apparent friction angle (Fb) and residual friction angle (Fr) have been determined and interpreted. In addition, the engineering design analyses have been performed considering the HoekBrown and Barton’s failure criteria which are based on rock mass parameters (Hoek vd, 1995; Barton, 1993).
