THE INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECT OF VARIOUS HEATING RATES ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF DIFFERENT STEELS
Abstract
In this study, the effects of various heating rates on the mechanical properties of the
Ç 1020, Ç 1040 and Ç 4140 are investigated. Ç 1020, Ç 1040 and Ç 4140 steels were heated
to austenitic region and then cooled down to atmospheric temperature with a low heating
rate (heating starting from room temperature ), medium heating rate (heating by living in the
hot furnace ) ,and high heating rate ( heating in salt bath). In order to determine the effects
of low, medium and high heating rates on the mechanical properties of these steels, two
groups of experimental specimens from each steel type in which one group is subjected to
annealed heat treatment and the other group in unannealed condition are prepared. To
compare the mechanical properties of the experimental specimens, hardness and strength
levels were determined for all specimens. The greatest increase in strength in relation to the
increasing heating rate was obtained for Ç 4140 steel.
