ANALOGUE MODELING EXPERIMENTS USING ELECTROMAGNETIC SLINGRAM METHOD: A LINEAR CONDUCTIVE MODEL

Abstract

Metallic pipes and cables buried in a shallow depth are called linear conductors and can be explored by certain geophysical methods. Since the detection of these linear targets is generally desired in urban areas in which the cultural noise and static electrical perturbance effect are excessive and complex, the nature of the anomalies expected will probably change. The interpretation of field anomalies can correctly be made if the classical anomalies arising from such linear conductive targets are readily determined by modeling. However, this process can not be easily realized by analytically or numerically in electromagnetic (EM) methods. This problem can be achieved using EM analogue modeling experiments. In this study, the EM Slingram response of a linear conductive target was modeled in the laboratory and conventional analogous EM anomalies were obtained for two different frequencies and coil separations. Furthermore, the anomalies from three different maximum-coupled coil configurations which can be used with Slingram method, were compared against in pairs. The effect of insulator covering the linear conducting targets was also examined. All type of anomalies were obtained for in-line tandem and broadside arrays for comparison purposes.
