The performance characteristics of a multicylinder engine can be improved by optimisation of gas exchange process. The aim of optimisation of gas exchange process is determination at the same time of valve timing and geometry of inlet and exhaust systems with inserting turbocharging system if exists. The gas exchange process of a natural gas engine’s series has been optimised within a research project work. The whole engine including inlet and exhaust systems modelled in a engine cycle simulation code where finite difference method is used. Initially, numerical method and engine model used in this work have been verified by experiments. Then, the effects of engine parameters have been investigated for engine performance. In this paper, an V20 cylinder engine has been taken into account for investigation of inlet and exhaust systems on engine performance. Finally, it is shown that the geometry of exhaust system has an important effect on engine performance
