Abstract

Social media platforms are widely used for information seeking, socialization, and advertising. Some of the prominent accounts on these platforms are those that focus on motherhood. Mothers known as “Instamoms,” who have a large number of followers on Instagram, are frequently followed by women who are either expecting a child or are already mothers. This study examined the mediating role of perceived social support in the relationship between social comparison orientation and parental satisfaction among mothers who follow Instamoms. The sample consisted of 107 mothers with at least one child aged 0–6 who actively followed Instamom accounts on Instagram. Participants completed a demographic information form, the Iowa–Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and the Parenting Attitude Scale – Mother Form. Correlation analyses revealed that social comparison orientation was negatively and significantly associated with both parental satisfaction and perceived social support, whereas perceived social support was positively and significantly related to parental satisfaction. Furthermore, the indirect effect of social comparison orientation on parental satisfaction through perceived social support was found to be significant. These findings indicate a mediating role of perceived social support in this relationship. Overall, the results suggest that mothers with higher levels of social comparison orientation tend to perceive lower levels of social support, and this decrease in perceived social support is associated with lower parental satisfaction. The findings are discussed in light of the existing literature.
