Evaluation Of Clinical Research Knowledge Among Nurses In A University Hospital
Öz
Objective: To evaluate nurses’ knowledge about clinical research and its relation to relevant training and experience.
Material and method: The sample of this
descriptive study was formed of 306 nurses at Dokuz Eylul University Hospital
and 291 of them accepted to participate. Data was collected in August-2015 via
a survey. The sample was divided into three subgroups: Group1-nurses with
relevant training and experience, Group2-nurses with relevant experience but no
training, Group3-nurses who do not have both. A descriptive analysis was
performed for each group.
Results: 8.6% of the 291 nurses had been involved in
clinical research and only 3.8% of the nurses had relevant training. However,
none of them had received any standardised training. The correct answer rates
for most of the statements regarding nurses’ knowledge were 20-45% more for who
had training compared to the others. The lowest correct answer rate among all
groups was in response to a statement regarding the participation of vulnerable
populations in clinical research. The correct answer rates for the statements
regarding Good Clinical Practice and the Declaration of Helsinki were 81.8% for
who have training and 50% or less for the others. While correct answer rates of
nurses who had training, for the statements regarding clinical research design
were more than 63%, these rates for nurses in
the other two groups were below 37%.
Conclusion: Clinical research training increases nurses’
clinical research knowledge. Designing and providing basic training programmes
regarding clinical researches and their ethical relevance as well as
encouraging the nurses to participate in those training programmes will have a
significant role in increasing the quantity of the high-quality clinical
researches in Turkey.
