Evaluation of Teachers' Views on NEET, Early School Leaving and Skill Mismatch in Vocational High Schools
Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate teachers' views on the three main problematic issues of students studying in vocational high schools, namely "NEET (neither in school nor in employment), Early School Leaving and Skill Mismatch". This study was carried out within the scope of the EU ERASMUS+ KA202 Strategic Partnership in Vocational Education Project "Support to Choose Future Project". This research is a case study which is one of the qualitative study methods. This study, which was conducted with 20 teachers from different branches working in vocational high schools, was conducted in the form of semi-structured interviews. The results obtained from the interviews through content analysis show the evaluations of the teachers working in vocational high schools on the problems identified. When the findings of the evaluations on the problematics of "NEET, Early School Leaving and Skill Mismatch" are analysed; Inadequate vocational materials, location of vocational high schools far from industry and similar establishments, lack of an employment-oriented education system, wrong field preference (lack of guidance and orientation services), social media addiction, unattractiveness of reading, lack of family awareness of education, loss of parents, lack of self-knowledge, lack of motivation (desire to read), job anxiety, educated people cannot live more comfortably than non-educated people, aimlessness, financial inadequacy, inability to set goals, lack of self- confidence. Considering the results of the study, it is believed that vocational and technical high schools, when properly understood, can contribute directly and indirectly to countries, individuals, and societies.
