The Pedagogy of the Opening: Suhrawardī's Ethical Hermeneutics of Al-Fātiḥa in Nughbat Al-Bayān
Abstract
This article examines Nughbat al-Bayān fī Tafsīr al-Qurʾān, the Qurʾānic commentary of ʿUmar b. Muḥammad al-Suhrawardī (d. 632/1234), with particular focus on his interpretation of Sūrah al-Fātiḥa. Although Suhrawardī is widely studied as a formative figure in the institutionalization of Sufism through his ethical and pedagogical treatise ʿAwārif al-Maʿārif, his engagement with Qurʾānic exegesis has received comparatively little scholarly attention. This study offers a verse-by-verse analysis of al-Fātiḥa, examining both the philological character and the ethically significant dimensions of Suhrawardī’s concise exegetical remarks in Nughbat al-Bayān. Suhrawardī approaches al-Fātiḥa primarily through philological conciseness, with minimal speculative theology or juridical argumentation. By situating these philological and ethical dimensions within their proper interpretive context, the study contributes to a fuller understanding of Sufi Qurʾānic interpretation and highlights the significance of Nughbat al-Bayān within Suhrawardī's intellectual legacy. The study’s originality lies in its demonstration that philological conciseness itself can function as a vehicle for ethical signification within appropriate institutional and presuppositional contexts,a finding that challenges the assumption that interpretive richness requires discursive elaboration.
