The effects of preoperative and postoperative anxiety on postoperative pain and analgesic consumption in septoplasty

Abstract

Objectives: In this study, we aimed to evaluate preoperative and postoperative anxiety and effects of anxiety on the postoperative pain and analgesic consumption in nasal septoplasty. Methods: One hundred ninety three volunteered patients completed the Spielberger\'s State –Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S and T) before the operation. It were recorded the age, gender, education level, settlement place of the patients, previous history of any operation, methods of anaesthesia. It were used the STAI-S to evaluate the anxiety levels and a 10 cm linear VAS (0=none to 10=intolerable) to measure pain levels postoperatively. Postoperative analgesic consumtion were recorded. Results: In this study, we found that STAI-T scores are higher in women. There was no relation between the methods of anaesthesia and the STAI and VAS scores. Postoperative pain and analgesic consumption did not correlate with STAI scores and VAS scores. Conclusion: Preoperative and postoperative anxiety has no effects on the postoperatve pain levels and analgesic consumption in septoplasty as a minor procedure and a out-patient surgery.

Septoplasti operasyonlarında preoperatif ve postoperatif anksiyetenin postoperatif ağrı ve analjezik ihtiyacına etkisi

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmada septoplasti operasyonu geçiren hastalarda preoperatif ve postoperatif anksiyeteyi ve anksiyetenin postoperatif ağrı ve analjezik ihtiyacına etkisini araştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Yöntemler: Operasyondan önce, yüz doksan üç gönüllü hasta Spielberger Durumluk/Sürekli Anksiyete (STAI-S ve T) Ölçeğini doldurdu. Hastaların yaş, cinsiyet, eğitim durumu, yerleşim yeri, geçirilmiş operasyon deneyimi ve anestezi yöntemleri kaydedildi. Postoperatif anksiyete seviyesini ölçmek için STAI-S ve ağrı seviyesini ölçmek için Vizüel Analog Skala (VAS, 0: hiç ağrım yok, 10: çok şiddetli ağrı) ölçeği kullanıldı. Postoperatif analjezik tüketimi kaydedildi. Bulgular: Çalışmada, STAI-T ortalamaları kadınlarda daha yüksek bulundu. Anestezi yöntemlerinin anksiyete ve ağrı skorları ile ilişkisi olmadığı bulundu. Postoperatif VAS skorları ve toplam analjezik tüketimi arasında korelasyon vardı ve erkeklerde daha yüksekti. STAI skorları ve VAS skorları ile postoperatif ağrı ve analjezik tüketimi arasında ilişki bulunmadı. Sonuçlar: Minör ve günübirlik bir cerrahi olan septoplasti operasyonlarında preoperatif ve postoperatif anksiyete düzeyleri, postoperatif ağrı düzeylerini ve analjezik ihtiyacını etkilememektedir.
