Osseous Metaplasia in mitral valve in an elderly case

Abstract

Metaplasia is a reversible replacement of one cell type with another mature differentiated cell type. Osseous metaplasia refers to the formation of mature bone elements in extraskeletal tissues. It can occur anywhere in body. It is encountered very rarely. This rare finding has been reported in some tissues and neoplasia of various organs. Osseous metaplasia in cardiac valves appears infrequently in literature. The exact pathophysiologic mechanisms of osseous metaplasia and the origin of bone cells in ossified valves are unknown. However, this metaplasia process has been reported to be closely related with calcification .In our study we aimed to present a case in which we diagnosed as osseous metaplasia in mitral valve.

İleri yaş bir olguda mitral kapakta osseöz metaplazi

Abstract

Metaplazi, bir hücre tipinin bir başka matür diferansiye hücre tipi ile reversibl yer değiştirmesidir. Osseöz metaplazi iskelet dışı dokularda olgun kemik elemanlarının oluşumu anlamına gelir. Vücutta her yerde oluşabilir. Çok nadir rastlanır. Bu nadir bulgu bazı dokularda ve çeşitli organların neoplazilerinde rapor edilmiştir. Literatürde kalp kapaklarında osseöz metaplazi nadiren görülmektedir. Osseöz metaplazinin tam patofizyolojik mekanizması ve ossifiye kapaklardaki kemik hücrelerinin kaynağı bilinmemektedir. Ancak bu metaplazi sürecinin kalsifikasyonla yakından ilişkili olduğu bildirilmektedir. Çalışmamızda mitral kapakta osseöz metaplazi tanısı koyduğumuz olgumuzu sunmayı amaçladık.
