The relationship between prognostic parameters and tumor associated tissue eosinophilia in supraglottic laryngeal tumors

Abstract

Objective: Tumor-associated tissue eosinophilia (TATE) has been noted in human cancers, sometimes with dif­ferent results regarding their association with clinical out­come. In this study, the association between TATE and prognostic parameters of supraglottic laryngeal cancer was analyzed. Materials and methods: Sixty-two patients with diagno­sis of supraglottic laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and who treated surgically in our center were evaluated. The cases were divided into 3 categories according to the av­erage number of eosinophils per high-power field (400x): 0 (negative), 1-5 (grade 1+), more than 5 (grade 2+). Results: We found 24 TATE-negative (38.7%) and 38 TATE-positive (61.3%) cases. There was not any statisti­cally significant correlation between TATE and tumor dif­ferentiation, vascular invasion, perineural invasion, lymph node metastasis, patients\' ages, T stages (p>0.05). As expected, vascular invasion correlated with lymph node metastasis (p=0.001). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that TATE has no correlation with prognostic parameters such as histologic differentiation, vascular invasion, perineural invasion, lymph node metastasis, patients\' ages and T stages in supraglottic laryngeal squamous cell carcino­ma. The data suggest that stromal eosinophilic infiltration is not useful for determining biological aggressiveness in supraglottic laryngeal cancer.

Supraglottik larinks karsinomlarında tümör ilişkili doku eozinofilisinin prognostik parametreler ile ilişkisi

Abstract

Amaç: Tümör ilişkili doku eozinofilisi (TİDE) birçok in­san kanserinde izlenebilir, klinik gidiş ile ilişkisi değişik sonuçlar gösterebilir. Bu çalışmada TİDE ile supraglottik karsinomların prognostik parametrelerinin ilişkisi analiz edilmiştir. Gereç ve yöntem: Merkezimizde supraglottik skuamöz hücreli larinks kanseri tanısı alan ve cerrahi uygulanan 62 olgu incelendi. Olgular her büyük büyütme alanındaki (400x) ortalama eozinofil sayısına göre şu şekilde 3 ka­tegoriye ayrılmıştır: 0 (negatif), 1-5 (derece 1+) ve 5\'den çok (derece 2+). Bulgular: Olgular 24 TİDE-negatif (%38,7) ve 38 Tİ­DE-pozitif (%61,3) olarak saptandı. Tümör evresi, tümör diferansiasyon derecesi, lenf nodu metastaz varlığı, len­fovasküler invazyon varlığı, perinöral invazyon ve hasta yaşı ile eozinofilik reaksiyonun derecesi arasında anlamlı ilişki saptanmadı. Beklendiği gibi lenfovasküler invazyon ile lenf nodu metastazı görülmesi arasında istatiksel ola­rak anlamlı bir ilişki saptandı (p= 0,001). Sonuç: Bu çalışmanın sonuçları supraglottik larinks sku­amöz hücreli karsinomlarında, tümör ilişkili doku eozino­filisi ile yaş, tümör diferansiasyon derecesi, tümör evresi, vasküler invazyon, perinöral invazyon, lenf nodu metas­tazı gibi prognostik faktörler arasında bir ilişki olmadığını göstermiştir. Bu bulgular stromal eozinofil infiltrasyonu­nun supraglottik larinks karsinomlarının biyolojik agresi­vitesini belirlemede kullanılamayacağını telkin etmektedir.
