THE CONTRUBITIONS OF AL-FÂRÂBÎ TO THE SOCIOLOGY OF CIVILIZATION
Abstract
The Sociology of Civilization
investigates the
civilizational aspects of city
and societies and the urban
and social aspects of civilizations.
In the social theory
of an Islamic philosopher,
the Second Teacher Ebû Nasr
al-Fârâbî, civilization has an
important place. Al-Fârâbî
(Alpharabius), a theorist
of society and civilization,
approaches to society, social
life, and civilization with a
perspective which can be
called “sociological reading.”
In the Philosopher’s
“sociology of civilization”,
civilization points to social
life, the necessity of living
in society for human beings.
Al-Fârâbî's “Virtuous City”
where is the building block
on the road going to society
and the universal ma'mûra
(inhabited world) seems to
be the center of civilization.
Essentially this is in a sense
similar to Ibn Khaldun’s Hadariyet
Society and Umran
Society. Al-Fârâbî produces
important knowledges about
the main features of the
civilization via his conceptualizations
and defi nitions
of virtuous city society,
virtuous ummat society, and
virtuous world society. The
Philosopher offers important
contributions the sociology
of civilization by considering
civilization in the context of
society and accepting all societies
whether complete or
incomplete society as having
civilization. The author, in
this work, tries to understand
and explain Al-Fârâbî’s
approach to civilization from
a sociological perspective.

Abstract
Medeniyet sosyolojisi, şehir ve toplumların medeniyet
boyutları ile medeniyetin şehir ve toplum
boyutlarını inceler. İslâm fi lozofu Muallim-i Sâni Ebû
Nasr el-Fârâbî’nin toplum teorisinde medeniyetin yeri
önemlidir. Bir toplum ve medeniyet teorisyeni olan
Fârâbî, toplum, toplumsal hayat ve medeniyet gibi
olgulara “sosyolojik okuma” olarak adlandırılabilecek
bir perspektifl e yaklaşır. Filozofun medeniyet sosyolojisinde,
medeniyet toplumsal hayata, insanların
tabiatları gereği toplum olma zorunluluklarına işaret
eder. Fârâbî’nin topluma ve evrensel ma’mûraya
giden yolda yapı taşı olan “el-Medînetü’l-fâzıla”sı,
medeniyetin merkezi olarak gözükmektedir. Aslında
bu, İbn Haldun’un Hadariyet Toplumu ve Umran
Toplumuyla oldukça yakın anlamlara karşılık gelir.
Fârâbî, erdemli şehir toplumu, erdemli ümmet toplumu
ve erdemli dünya toplumu kavramsallaştırma ve
tanımlamalarıyla medeniyetin temel özelliklerine dair
önemli bilgiler ortaya koymaktadır. Filozof, medeniyeti
toplumsal bağlamda ele almakla ve tam toplumuyla
eksik toplumuyla bütün toplumları medeniyet
sahibi olarak kabul etmekle medeniyet sosyolojisine
önemli katkılar sunmaktadır. Bu çalışmada Fârâbî’nin
medeniyet yaklaşımları sosyolojik perspektifl e anlaşılmaya
ve anlamlandırılmaya çalışılmaktadır.
