A Contribution to Discussions regarding the Last Time of Isha Prayer

Abstract

Salat (prayer) is time fixed worship. The Qur’anic verses affirmed the times of prayers without determining certain times for the start and end points. However, the Sunnah specified clearly the start and end points for the times of prayers. However, the different narrations concerning some prayer times or the different meanings of the expressions, caused the differentiation of opinions about them. The end point of the time of Isha-prayer is one of this type, because there are different narrations about it. When these traditions are brought together, it can be said that the Prophet (pbuh) generally prayed Isha-prayer starting from the beginning of night (after disappearance of the redness on the horizon) in one third of the night, and he did not delayed after that time. Sometimes, he delayed till midnight and he exceptionally postponed it after midnight until before the dawn. This difference has been reflected in the opinion of jurists, a small group advocated the one third of the night as the time of Isha, but another part of scholars accepted the midnight as the end point for time of Isha. Some other scholars said that the time of Isha prayer lasts till the dawn
