The Power of Symbol and Symbols in Islam

Abstract

Some linguistic, aesthetical, and artistic expression forms like religious or non-religious gestures and also architectural sturctures or figures that aim to deliver a meaning and purpose has far/deep meanings that deliver us to them indirectly through implications along with their indications. While the first observable implications of a linguistic expression or religious gestures and rituals show the primary, essential, and evident meaning layer, this secondary meaning which is indirect and inner and at the same time enthusiastic in respect of meaning and sensual intensity can be called as symbolic, figurative meaning. When we consider the type of relation between evident meaning and this inner and symbolic meaning, we see this evident scope is a threshold, a gate that is opened to the world of symbolic and spiritual meaning; an evident handle without it, it is impossible to get into this world of secondary meaning. In particular, besides symbolic expression forms in basic texts of Islam and its power of expression, primary worshipping forms’ indirectly and figuratively delivering to spiritual and reality ranks that are beyond feelings indicates that it has an epistemic power that appeals to all cognitive abilities of humankind. Because they are merry steps of Islam (mi’râc, me’âric) – by Islamic naming Shaâir which deliver to a higher conciousness –that raise to the world of Transendence from ground level. In this article within the scope of symbolism, we will try to refer to Islamic symbolic meaning density that uninterruptedly addressing to Islam’s spiritual power and its Transcendental dimension that is especially teofani that appears in ablution (vudû’), obligatory alms, Ka’be-hacc, fasting (savm), religious offerings or sacrificial animals (nahr, udhıye)
