Research on the Animated Movie Caillou According to Religious and Values Education

Abstract

Children learn effectively from observing others. Watching animated movies can have a strong influence on children. In fact, animated movies can be one of education’s most powerful tools. However, because children will often internalize and imitate a cartoon character’s behaviors, the animated movies can play a major role in influencing the religious and values education of a child. The present research studies the animated movie Caillou. Although this movie has entertained millions of audiences in Turkey and around the world, it has also influenced children’s religious and values education. Research confirms that the movie does not include physical or verbal violence or sexuality. In fact, the movie has many positive verbal and visual messages promoting values with no subliminal messages or subtext. Furthermore, the hero of Caillou serves as a model leaving a positive influence on the audience. However, Caillou also projects some areas justifying reasonable concern for the parents. The movie’s portrayal of a family is framed from a negative feminist’s perspective with a reversal of gender roles. This reversal of the gender roles has a negative impact on the audience, and can cause confusion for children who are still trying to form their normal gender roles
