Meanings of some letters /prepositions used in Jurisprudence within the framework of Al-Sarakhsi’s ‘Usul al-Fiqh’

Abstract

Prepositions/conjunctions are one of the most effective words that prevent misunderstandings in any language. In Arabic, prepositions are named hurûf al-maany. Hurûf al-maany has a specific important role in the interpretation of religious texts. Therefore, the scholars of Islamic jurisprudence have pointed out this fact of the language and reserved a section of this subject in their books. In this article, the meanings of some of these propositions, which are cited in the work of al-Sarakhsi, titled as Shams al-A’imma (400?-483 /1009?-1090), written on Islamic jurisprudence, are examined. Firstly, the definition of letter/character is made, and then general information about the prepositions is given. Moreover, the meanings and patterns of the usage of prepositions in Usul al-Fiqh of Al-Sarakhsi are explained. In these explanations the opinions and statements of scholars, especially the scholars of the Hanafi School are mentioned. In the conclusion, some assessments are made.
