CARTOON CRISIS: HOMOGENEOUS CULTURE DISCOURSE AND THE MANIFESTATION OF ISLAMOPHOBIA IN DENMARK

Abstract

30 Eylül 2005 tarihinde Danimarka’da Jyllands-Posten gazetesinde, İslâm peygamberine ve Müslümanlara
hakaret içeren karikatürlerin yayınlanması üzerine çıkan
olaylar, yüzün üzerinde kişinin ölümüyle sonuçlanmış- tır. Bunun öncesinde 11 Eylül 2001 tarihinde Amerika
Birleşik Devletleri’nde gerçekleştirilen saldırılarla başla- yan süreçten itibaren meydana gelen hadiseler genellikle
Hungtinton’ın 1993’te öne sürdüğü, ‘medeniyetler
çatışması’ teziyle izah edilmiştir. Ancak meselenin, me- deniyetler arasındaki çatışmanın ötesinde, birçok başka
sosyal, ekonomik ve benzeri boyutları da göz önünde bulundurulmalıdır. Üstelik söz konusu hadiselerde çoklu
medeniyetlerin rol aldığından bahsetmek zordur. Zira
başlıca aktörlerin İslâm ve Batı dünyası olduğu görül- mektedir. Bütün bunlara ilâveten bu olayların sonuçları
küresel boyutlara ulaşsa da, bilhassa karikatür krizinde
sebepler arasında yerel hususiyetlerin de bulunduğu göz
ardı edilmemelidir.
Bu çalışmada karikatür olayı, hem Batı’daki İslamo- fobinin hem de Danimarka’daki İslamofobik tutumun
ve kültürel bir duruş ve felsefenin tezahürü olması
yönleriyle ele alınacaktır. Karikatür krizinin yaşandığı
dönemde Danimarka’da bulunmamız, sürecin sebepleri- ni ve sonuçlarını analiz etmede bizzat gözlemlerimizden
yararlanmamıza ve meselenin lokal boyutlarını da müşa- hede etmemize imkân vermiştir.

KARİKATÜR KRİZİ: DANİMARKA’DA HOMOJEN KÜLTÜR SÖYLEMİ VE İSLAMOFOBİNİN TEZAHÜRÜ

Abstract

Publishing the insulting
cartoons of the Prophet
of Islam and Muslims
in the Jyllands-Posten
newspaper in Denmark
on September 30, 2005
caused many conflicts, and
over one hundred people
died. The events that
had taken place since the
beginning of the attacks
on September 11, 2001 in
the USA were explained
by the argument of “clash
of civilizations” that is put
forward by Hungtinton in
1993. However, beyond
the confusion between
civilizations, many other
social, economic and other
dimensions must be taken
into account. Moreover, it
is difficult to talk about the
role of multiple civilizations
in these events.
Because it is obvious that
the main actors are Islam
and the Western world.
In addition, although the
consequences of these
events have reached global
dimensions, it should not
be overlooked that there
are local specialties among
the causes, especially in the
cartoon crisis.
In this article, the cartoons
will be addressed both
by Islamophobia in the
West and by Islamophobic
attitude in Denmark and
by the cultural stance and
manifestation of cultural
philosophy in Denmark.
The fact that I was in Denmark
during the period of
the cartoon crisis enabled
me to take advantage of
my own observations to
analyze the causes and consequences
of the process,
and to observe the local
dimensions of the issue.
