Abstract

ISLAM IN MEXICO: HISTORY, CURRENT STATE, AND OPPORTUNITIES

Year 2023, Volume: 59 Issue: 3, 1205 - 1246, 25.09.2023

Abstract

According to current data, thousands of Muslims live in Mexico and Islam has at least five centuries of history in the country. Although Muslims from Africa, Asia and Europe did not have a continuous presence in the country in previous periods, Islam began to be actually practiced in the country with the waves of immigration that began at the end of the 19th century. Although predominantly Christian, Latin American societies do not exhibit the strong anti-Islamic attitudes seen in some Western societies. Especially since the 1980s, many Mexicans have converted to Islam as a result of tabligh efforts. Currently, Muslim communities exist and operate in many Mexican cities, including Mexico City, Torreón, Guadalajara, and San Cristóbal de las Casas. As far as opportunities are concerned, there are many steps that can be taken. Islam can invite more Mexicans to join the global family of believers if they follow the intellectual path, the cultural path, and/or the mystical path. This study, which deals with the past and present of Islam’s presence in Mexico and offers some suggestions for the future, is intended to fill a gap in the Turkish academic literature and provide a basis for researchers interested in the subject.
